Quote of the Day: Sharing and Teaching

This quote struck a nerve with me as this ultra competitive world is wrought full of knowledge and information hoarders. This behavior is especially prevalent in the business world, inside of companies where one or very few people grasp onto information so tightly that they metaphorically could be choking it, afraid that someone will rise from the ashes and use this knowledge or skill to depose them. It’s really not that serious, as no one benefits from this seemingly safeguarded knowledge, not the team, not the organization and not even the want to be gatekeeper. I believe being in this state of hoarding keeps you stagnant, and without room to grow or to improve upon the skill you’re so fervently trying to conceal from the prying eyes of others.

On the other hand, you could be the opposite of a hoarder, an enabler of sorts. Teach the next person what you know and the next one after that. Teaching happens to be one of the best ways to learn. By imparting what you know, you step everyone’s game up and you get things flowing, you engage in dialogues and you gain perspective that you otherwise wouldn’t have.

This quote is originally from Annie Dillard’s book The Writing Life. We found it on Austin Kleon’s book Show Your Work!
